The most important practice that should be followed by Insomnia patients is to maintain a pattern in your sleep timings. Once you tune your body to sleep at a particular time, your body will automatically prepare for sleep according to the pattern.
Five important rituals that will help you get good sleep are:
- Spend some quiet time before going to sleep. You may choose to take a warm bath, meditate or use some relaxation techniques like breathing exercises or listening to music to become relaxed before going for sleep.
- Keep your bedroom dark while going for sleep. Darkness slows down your thoughts and makes you feel peaceful.
- If you are preoccupied with thoughts best would be to write them down in a journal. Write down your worries and also try to write some possible solutions for them. When you see your worries in writing, it makes you feel closer to get over them. Writing also reduces the chaos and organizes your mind.
- Do not lie on your bed if you are not sleepy. If you lie down without sleeping, worries about not getting sleep will actually keep you awake.
- Television should be restricted in your bedroom. Too much light, stimulating commercials and news keeps you alert and awake.
Apart from following these bedtime rituals, you should expose yourself to sunlight during the day in order to regularize your body’s biological clock. Keeping your body active during the day also helps you have good sleep in at night. Learn 20 time tested tips to deal with Insomnia.
