Muscle Relaxation Excercises Help Treat Insomnia

Many psychotherapists teach relaxation and biofeedback techniques to help deal with the problem of Insomnia.

Muscle Relaxation Exercise is one of the methods that helps deal with Insomnia.

Here is how you can do this exercise:

Think of your muscles in groups (such as all the muscles in the arms, legs and chest). Imagine them loosening up and feel relaxed.

Focus on one group of muscles at a time; this allows all the tension and discomfort to flow away from these muscles.

This can be achieved through imagery exercises (a method where the individual imagines a peaceful place), autogenic exercises (a method where the individual give himself/herself positive reassurances), and breathing exercises. These methods help in relaxing the body.

When you begin this exercise, first find a comfortable position, then take three deep but
gentle breaths. Allowing all the tension and discomfort to flow away as described
above, focus on each of the following areas in turn: Feet, Legs, Hips, Lower back and stomach, Chest, Shoulders, Neck, Base of skull, Jaw, Tongue, Temples, Eyes, Forehead, and Scalp.

At the end of the exercise, take two deep, slow breaths. This technique helps in relaxing your body, thus preparing you for a peaceful sleep.
