Studies reveal that over 70 million Americans suffer from some type of sleep disorder. By these statistics you may realize what a serious national health issue Insomnia hasĀ become.
Dr. Eric Dyken, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the University of Iowa, says there are 95 different categories of sleep disorders to sort through, which means self-diagnosis is pretty tough.
A very negligible amount of people can improve their sleep patterns by following simple tips like, avoiding caffeine, shifting the TV out of the room, listening to music etc . But not everyone can help their sleep disorders by these simple tips.
“Sometimes you do need an expert,” Dyken says.
Of all the health problems, psychological health problems are most neglected ones. People do not consider them as serious health issues because they are not really fatal like other physiological health problems.
The least you could do is to improve your lifestyle by trying simple tips. You could retire to bed a little earlier than you normally did, read comics, sip ginseng tea or drink warm milk. According to Dr. Dyken, the bedroom environment also effects your sleep.
Dr. Dyken says keeping the room at a comfortable temperature, making sure the room’s dark and quiet are all parts of good “sleep hygiene.” If you suspect you have a serious sleep disorder, Dr. Dyken suggests consulting with your family doctor first and waiting to see if he recommends you to visitĀ a sleep clinic where your sleep would be observed. Based on these observations, doctors would sort you into one or more categories of sleep disorders. This would help them give you an individualized treatment for the sort of sleep disorders you suffer.
