Traditional Chinese Medicine has had a very impressive history which begins centuries ago. According to Chinese Medicine Insomnia is caused by the imbalance of the three treasures of the body – Chi, Shen and Jing.
Chi/Qi is a vital energy that all of us have within us. This energy is always stationary and keeps flowing in the organs. When Chi is blocked we may experience Insomnia.
Shen is Spirit that resides within our heart. It effects the emotional and spiritual capacity of all our organs. People whose Shen is disturbed may suffer from a lot of emotional and mental problems like anxiety, depression and stress that ultimately lead to insomnia.
Jing means Essence. Jing is said to be produced by the spleen from food, air and water and it is basically stored in our kidneys. We all inherit a finite amount of Jing from our parents that gradually diminishes with time. Overactivity and excessive physical stress erodes Jin. This leads to Insomnia too, especially the type when people find it difficult to remain asleep for long intervals and wake up frequently.
Therefore Insomnia can be treated by addressing the imbalance of the Three Treasures as described by the Chinese medicine.
Traditional Chinese Medicine treats Insomnia by communicating heart and kidney, nourishing Qi and blood of heart and spleen, promoting digestion and removing retention of food .The representative formulae are “Harmony-Preserving pills, Mid-Reinforcing and Qi-Benefiting Decoction, Rehmannia Bolus with six Herbs”. Acupuncture and massage has a fine effect on insomnia too.
