We all have heard many times that everyone needs a minimum of 8 hours of sleep. But that is not true. Every person has varying sleep needs just like they have varying food needs. Some people need as little as five hours of sleep daily while others may need as much as 9 hours daily.
Individual sleep needs depend greatly on factors like

In order to determine how many hours of sleep you need, you should map the timings of your sleep daily. Make a chart marking the days of the week, record your sleeping and waking times. Calculate how many hours of uninterrupted sleep you might have slept in a day. Take an average at the end of the week.
The best way to find out whether you had slept enough or not is your feeling throughout the day, if you have slept enough, you would wake up feeling fresh and feel alert the rest of the day. If you have slept less it will affect your alertness and performance the entire day. Researchers have found out that reducing your sleep even for as little as half an hour would reduce your alertness by about one-third.
On the other hand, if you sleep more than what is required you will end up impairing your memory and your ability to think and process information. You will end up feeling dull and sluggish throughout the day.
