Yoga for a Good Sleep

Yoga is a powerful yet natural form of exercise which helps the human body and mind overcome a wide variety of physical and psychological problems. Yoga has been shown to be effective in the treatment of insomnia and sleeplessness related to stress and anxiety. Regular practice of yoga may highly benefit insomniacs.

How Yoga Helps

Yoga will improve your sleep in many ways. The quality of your sleep will increase because of the stimulatory effect of yoga on the nervous system, and in particular the brain. The practice of certain yoga postures will increase the blood circulation to the sleep centre in the brain, which results in normalizing the sleep cycle.

Yoga triggers the elimination of toxins from the body and rejuvenates the entire body right down to cellular level. The practice of breathing allows for more oxygen in the body providing clarity to the mind.

Postures

Before hitting the bed, you could do a few gentle stretches that help relieve tension and make you relax. ‘Happy baby’ is a good choice because it releases the hips and low back, leaving you feeling more flexible. ‘Goddess pose’, which opens the groins, is also a good option. You could try both these poses while lying on bed.

Corpse pose usually marks the end of a typical yoga class, and is a good way to end your day too. Lying in bed, focus on each part of your body and soften it before moving on. Begin with the toes, move up the legs and arms, through the torso to the neck, face and head. Then spend a few minutes just breathing.
