According to a recent study, sitting and working on a computer for 5 hours of day increases one’s risk towards suffering from insomnia and depression.

Researchers have conducted a study “Effect of computer usage on sleep” on 25,000 people and how found that people who work for 5 or more hours on the computer have a problem getting up in the morning, and hardly get any sleep at night. They tend to face lot of stress and strain, are de- motivated and tend to get easily discouraged.

Another study on computer professionals that was carried on for a period of three years has come up with a suggestion that companies should restrict a worker’s time spent at the computer to maximum time of 3 hours.

A psychological explanation given to the cause of depression amongst computer professionals is that, working on the computer for long, causes one to feel isolated from the others. Even though one is working in a busy office, there are no chances of less socialization as one is tied up with his/her work at the computer. This causes a feeling of isolation and depression.

Added to this there are other problems of back ache, shoulder pain, dry eyes and stress etc which force a person to be awake every late in the night thus increasing the risk of Insomnia.

As companies cannot reduce working hours over the computer, they are introducing various team-building efforts where employees come together and socialize. This is done to combat the negative effects of depression and insomnia.
