Stress at workplace, hectic schedules, personal relationships etc. in one’s life can cause insomnia. Due to stress, people may find it difficult to fall asleep, stay asleep and have sound sleep. For a person with stress related insomnia, dealing with stress can help him/her to overcome insomnia.
Not all cases of insomnia are due to stress, but recently there have been increasing cases of stress related insomnia. Stressors such as family problems, work pressure etc. are some of the common reasons for stress.
How are Stress and Insomnia Related?
Stress keeps the body in a state of hyperarousal such as increased blood pressure, heart rate and breathing. But, falling asleep involves slower heart rate, decreased blood pressure and regular breathing pattern. As sleeping process and stress-response process are opposite, stress makes it difficult to sleep.
How to Know If You Have Stress Related Insomnia?
To know if you have stress related insomnia, you should analyze when the insomnia actually started. If your insomnia is consistent with stressful events, you might be having stress related insomnia. If your insomnia affects for a night or two, then you can try managing it. However, if it persists for days and affects your work, health etc. it is recommended to consult your doctor.
How to Manage Stress Related Insomnia:
Stress related insomnia can be managed by:
- Having a regular sleeping pattern i.e. sleeping and waking up at the same time
- Avoiding coffee, tea, soft drinks and nicotine just before bedtime
- Having pre-sleeping rituals such as having bath, listening to music, and reading books
- Making the bedroom conducive for sleeping with low noise, light and proper temperature
- Avoiding day time napping
- Exercising during the day
- Seeking stress management help
Proper management of stress can help you fall asleep. As quality sleep would mean more productivity and alertness, dealing with insomnia promptly is important.
