What is Terminal Insomnia?
Terminal insomnia is a condition which involves waking up too early in the morning only to find it difficult to sleep again. People suffering from terminal insomnia may find it easy to fall asleep, but staying in the bed long enough to get proper sleep becomes difficult. Sleeping for few hours can leave a person exhausted, tired, and irritable – hence, once should deal with terminal insomnia and get rid of it as soon as possible.
Terminal Insomnia Symptoms:
People with terminal insomnia may get only 4 to 5 hours of sleep. This amount of sleep is not sufficient for most people. This can lead to the following symptoms:
- Day time sleepiness
- Lack of concentration
In few cases, people are short sleepers and do not require long hours of sleep. We do not find the above symptoms in such people. Such people do not suffer from this form of insomnia.
Managing Terminal Insomnia:
Terminal insomnia can be caused due to emotional causes or physical physical causes.
Emotional disturbances such as stress, frustration, anxiety, anger are capable of waking you up early in the morning as they can be hidden in the subconscious mind. You can find yourself suddenly wide awake in the early hours with negative emotions. To know if your terminal insomnia is caused due to emotional reasons, keep a sleep dairy and record your feelings when you wake up in the morning. Recognizing the emotional factors can help you to manage them and overcome insomnia.
Physical factors such as noise, light, temperature can disturb your sleep and awaken you. To recognize the physical factors, record the possible physical disturbances in your sleep ing diary after you wake up. Possible physical causes for terminal insomnia can be noise or light from the neighborhood, sounds due to traffic, temperature change etc. Certain people are vulnerable to even slight disturbance. After recognizing your physical disturbances, you can work towards minimizing them.
If your efforts to minimize terminal insomnia do not work, consult your doctor who can recommend you ways to stay asleep without waking up in the morning. He/she may recommend lifestyle modifications, sleep medications or counseling to enable you to sleep properly
