If you wake up in the middle of the night, you can try to fall back asleep by listening to soft music or an audio book. If this does not work, try going to another room and do some activities until you feel like sleeping again.
Here are a few tips to overcome sleep maintanence insomnia:
- Relax before sleeping by having a warm bath, listening to music, or reading a book. These can help you to fall asleep
- Avoid exercising during the night or before bedtime. Instead, exercise during the day, which can help you sleep better during the night
- Avoid heavy dinner, caffeine, alcohol and sugary drinks before bedtime
- Keep the bedroom conducive for sleeping by maintaining proper temperature, low light and comfortable bedding
- Make sure you have no disturbances from noise, bright light during the night
If your sleep maintenance insomnia is persistent, consulting a sleep specialist for evaluation is recommended. Your doctor may recommend some lifestyle changes or prescribe sleep medications to overcome this problem.
