Anti-Snoring Mouthpiece

Snoring is a problem faced by many people,  which can result in lack of quality sleep, irritability, daytime drowsiness, and decreased concentration. Sleeping partners are also disturbed due to the noise from snoring.  A good option to deal with the problem of snoring is to use an anti-snoring mouthpiece. This device, which is supposed to be worn inside the mouth,  pulls the lower jaw slightly forward, thereby reducing snoring.

What Causes Snoring?
Snoring is caused by the relaxation of the muscles of the upper airway. As a result the respiratory tract is narrowed, making it difficult for the air to flow freely. The inhalation becomes harder and the soft tissues lining the respiratory tract vibrate, resulting in snoring.  Snoring can be caused due to throat muscle weakness, bulky throat tissue due to obesity, or nasal passageway obstruction.

How can Anti-Snoring Mouthpiece Reduce Snoring?
An anti-snoring mouth piece is a device which is supposed to be fitted into the mouth. Once it sits inside the mouth, the device pulls the lower jaw slightly forward. When the lower jaw is pulled forward, there is more room for the airflow at the back of the throat. The respiratory tract is widened. This results in unobstructed airflow during sleep and can reduce or stop snoring.

Few anti-snoring devices also hold up the soft palate, for unobstructed airflow. To get the mouthpiece inside the mouth, a spatula is used. The mouthpiece can be used regularly, every night. However, some people can experience side effects such as dry mouth, jaw and tooth discomfort.

In some cases, snoring may be caused due to sleep apnea. The presence of sleep apnea can be determined by conducting a sleep study. Sleep apnea is best treated by CPAP. But, if the CPAP is not tolerated by the patient, anti-snoring mouthpiece can be used.

Anti-snoring mouthpiece reduces snoring and would be a good choice to deal with the problem of snoring. It is recommended to consult your doctor for choosing the best anti-snoring mouthpiece. He/she would be better able to choose the best one for you.
