Snoring is caused when the air does not flow freely through the nose or mouth. Due to the obstruction- the tongue, soft palate, uvula, and upper throat produce snoring sound while sleeping. Snoring is common in children and can lead to disturbed sleep and daytime sleepiness.
Children snoring causes can be simple such as cold or allergies. Snoring can also be caused due to more serious reasons such as sleep apnea, deviated nasal septum, enlarged tonsils or adenoids etc. However, consulting a doctor can help the parents to determine the underlying problems and treating the snoring problem.
Children Snoring: Causes
Children snoring can be caused due to the following reasons:
- A deviated nasal septum can obstruct the airflow and cause snoring
- Cold infection cause block the nasal passageways and cause snoring
- Enlarged tonsils or adenoids can block the airway and result in snoring
- Being overweight and obese can interfere with the airflow
- Sleep apnea which involves pauses in breathing, can cause snoring in children
Snoring can cause disturbed sleep, daytime sleepiness and concentration problems. Snoring caused due to allergies can be treated by medications and snoring caused by cold, subsides once the cold is treated. However, if the snoring is persistent, the child should be taken to a doctor for diagnosis.
A doctor may check the tonsils and adenoids, and recommend removing them if required. Allergy triggered snoring can be managed by staying away from the allergens. If the doctor suspects, sleep apnea, he/she may conduct a sleep study and recommend a CPAP to treat it. As childhood obesity can also cause snoring, reducing weight and shifting to a healthy diet may also be recommended.
Anti-snoring devices, pillows, changing the sleeping position to the side may also help in getting rid of snoring in some cases. Children snoring can have negative consequences and do consult your doctor if it is persistent.
