CPAP is pronounced as “see – pap”. The full form of CPAP is “Continuous Positive Airway Pressure”.  Positive Airway therapy is mostly used to cure a disease called “Obstructive Sleep Apnea”.

Sleep Apnea is a disorder in which the patient stop breathing during night. Sleep apnea means cessation of breathe characterized by repetitive episodes of upper air obstruction. Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by repetitive airway obstruction during sleep due to the narrowing of the respiratory passages

How Does The Therapy Works:

A continuous positive airway machine is used by the patients at home. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the upper way muscles become narrow, as the muscles relax naturally during sleep. This reduces oxygen in blood and person wakes up.

The CPAP machine stops this phenomenon, by delivering a stream of air with the help of hose to a nasal mask, splinting the airway, so that unobstructed breathing becomes possible, reducing and/or preventing apneas.

The CPAP machine blows air at prescribed pressure. The necessary pressure is adjusted by the sleep physician. CPAP treatment is highly effective in treating obstructive sleep apnea. For some patient’s the improvement in the quality of sleep and quality of life can be seen after single night’s use of CPAP treatment.
