Transient insomnia is a type of insomnia which exists only for a short period of time. It is mostly caused due to stress or a change. Transient insomnia usually resolves in a few weeks. However, if it continues for longer periods of time, treatment might be needed. Transient insomnia is common in women due to hormonal fluctuations. It is also experienced due to injury or a traumatic event.
Transient insomnia Causes:
Following are the some of the causes of transient insomnia:
- Injury or illness
- Traumatic events
- Traveling
- Stress at workplace
- Change in weather
- Jet lag
Transient insomnia in women is a common problem. Menstruation, pregnancy or menopause can all cause hormonal fluctuations which can in turn cause insomnia. During menstruation and pregnancy, the progesterone levels become low, which can in turn result in insomnia. This is because progesterone aids in sleeping and low levels of it can cause insomnia.
Certain habits can also cause transient insomnia. Drinking caffeine or smoking can cause insomnia. Taking certain medications can also cause transient insomnia.
Treating Transient Insomnia:
Here are few tips to treat transient insomnia:
- Have a regular sleeping schedule – sleep and wake up at the same time every day
- Keep the noise low in the bedroom. Make sure the light is low and temperature is comfortable in the bedroom
- Avoid nicotine, caffeine before bedtime
- Have pre-sleep routines such as listening to music or having a warm shower, which can help in inducing sleep
Transient insomnia resolves in a few weeks. However, if it continues for longer periods, it can become chronic. Hence, consulting a doctor or a sleep specialist is recommended.
