Foods That Can Cause Insomnia

If you do not get quality sleep at night, take a look at your diet to see if the food you are consuming is the reason for your insomnia. Spicy foods, desserts, chocolate, soda and coffee are some food items that affect sleep. Common reasons for insomnia include consuming caffeine, and food sensitivity or food allergy.

Caffeine stimulates the nerves, which is great for activity during the day. But, if consumed before bedtime, it can affect sleep. Some common caffeine carrying items include tea, cough and cold medicine, soda and coffee. Be caffeine free by evening, so that you can have unhindered quality sleep at night.

Food allergy

If you are allergic to certain foods, it could lead to insomnia if you consume them. Chocolate, dairy, corn and wheat are common culprits. An usual symptom of food sensitivity is restlessness, which may cause insomnia at night. Food intolerance also causes fatigue in the morning after waking up. You may feel tired and irritable and wish for more sleep.

Gas-producing Foods

Some foods are difficult to digest and may produce gas. These include garlic, cucumbers, beans, cabbage and broccoli. If your digestive system is taxed, it may affect your sleep.

Chinese Food

Chinese food can cause insomnia because it contains high amounts of MSG (Monosodium Glutamate). This stimulant is also used as a preservative and can be found in a lot of seasonings.

Sugary Foods

Sugary goods could cause insomnia as they create a sugar rush in the blood. The extra sugar gives you an energy boost if consumed before bedtime, affecting sleep.

Nicotine and Alcohol

Alcohol and cigarettes also impact sleep. Nicotine, being a stimulant, affects one’s sleeping ability. Alcohol alters the natural balance of chemicals in the brain. The body also releases adrenalin as a response to intake of alcohol. All these could lead to insomnia.
