How do you sleep ? I am not asking about switching off the light and closing your eyes. I wanted to know in what position do you sleep ? Do you sleep on your side, on you back or on your belly ? The type of configuration your body assumes prior to sleep or during sleep is your sleeping position.
Unconsciously, when we go to bed, our body takes the usual sleeping position. But have you ever thought how can sleeping positions affect you ? Sleeping positions have been observed to develop some health conditions in the newborns.
Some suggestive Position to Sleep
- According to Professor Chris Idzikowski, the director, The Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service, your sleeping position can define what type of person you are.
- According to Dr. Benjamin Spock, a pediatrician, an infant should never be slept on its back, if he vomits, he is more likely to choke on the vomitus.
- But according to a study performed in the year 2005, if an infant is allowed to sleep on his stomach for longer, he is more prone to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
- Some researchers also suggest expecting moms to sleep on their left side, so that more blood and nutrients will be supplied to the placenta and the baby.
- If you are prone to obstructive sleep apnea, then sleeping on your side with an elevated upper body over 30° or more will be of great help.
- Sleeping at one side will also help in preventing snoring.
