Insomnia is caused by a psychological condition or physiological problem. There are three types of insomnia:

Transient Insomnia

If the symptoms of your insomnia last for less than one week it belongs to the category of transient insomnia. This is the shortest duration for insomnia. If, for example, your insomnia lasts for only one day you are suffering from this. Transient insomnia is one that comes and goes. At times you can sleep easily and other times you might experience difficulties in sleeping. This is the most common form of insomnia.

Short Term Insomnia

In this your symptoms last from one week to three weeks. If you have a more severe form of insomnia than transient insomnia it is called short terms insomnia.

Chronic Insomnia

Symptoms in chronic insomnia last for longer than three weeks at a time. This is the rarest form of insomnia and the most difficult to live with. You might suffer from insomnia all the time without breaks in between to get respite from it.

Treatment

The treatment of insomnia need to factor in what insomnia you have. Transient insomnia might not need any invasive medications to treat it. Psychological methods and proper sleep habits might be enough to get rid of this form of insomnia.

The more difficult to treat short term and chronic insomnias sometimes require medications. In these conditions the psychological or medical condition causing the insomnia is more pronounced. Using medications for insomnia should always be prescribed and monitored by a doctor in order for you not to become dependent on them. In addition side effects of medications have to be taken into account when using them.
