. The usage of

side-effect caused by the usage is still being researched extensively. Efexor is an effective antidepressant and is used for treating anxiety and depression related disorders. This drug was prescribed 17.2 million times in the year 2007 in US, but 18 percent people who use this drug are known to suffer from insomnia.

Effexor and Insomnia:

Apart from insomnia, people who are on Venlafaxine suffer from sleep disturbances due to heartburn, frequent urination during nights, hot flashes and nightmares. Ironically, people who stop using this drug in order to cut down on their side-effects are known to get affected even more due to insomnia. Even in those who miss a dosage, the side-effects can be drastic.

Thus, people who are on this drug should make certain changes in their sleeping habits in order to achieve a satisfactory night sleep. Let us look at what to do.

Night-Time Habits

The American Academy of Family Physicians suggests that taking bath with warm water followed by a light brunch and little reading can help a person to sleep better. The bedroom should be free from any sort of pollution and be dark so that the circadian rhythm takes good effect.

Also, going to bed at the same time and waking at the same time everyday (including weekends and holidays) would help set a routine. In case, one fails to sleep within half an hour after retiring into the bed, he/she should move to another room for at least 20 minutes before returning back to the bedroom.

Caffeine and Daytime Naps

Caffeinated beverages and alcohol intake should be cut down as much as possible. Even smoking and tobacco should be given a break. Cut down on the daytime naps and exercise a lot.

Medication

Medications should be tried only after implementing lifestyle changes and if they do not seem to work effectively. Medicines like diphenhydramine, zolpidem/ambien and rozerem can create drowsiness and sleep. Although, the side-effects, though minimal should also be kept in mind.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Sleep therapists conduct half hour sessions of this particular therapy which enables insomniacs to achieve positive feelings about going to sleep.

Effexor and insomnia

are interrelated, but a patient should not stop the use of this antidepressant as it would only worsen the sleep disorder. Following the above lifestyle changes would help instead.
