Lifestyle and Home Remedies

Insomnia is usually treatable. However, here are some simple yet effective tips to treat insomnia:

  • Stick to a strict sleep schedule. Keep your bedtime and wake time consistent.
  • When you are not sleeping, get out of bed. Sleep as much as needed and then get out of bed. If you are not able to sleep, do something productive like reading.
  • Do not try to fall asleep. The harder you try, the more awake you’ll be! So, watch television or read something until you feel sleepy.

  • Find some of the easy relaxation techniques like a massage, yoga, breathing exercise, or prayer. This would help in inducing sleep.
  • It’s always better to limit or avoid naps. If you are not able to control your naps then do not nap for more than 30 minutes.
  • Make your bedroom comfortable to sleep. Keep your room temperature at a comfortable degree.
  • Stay active and exercise for at least 20 – 30 minutes daily at least 5 to 6 hours before you sleep in the night.
  • Limit or avoid the intake of alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine.
  • Avoid large meals and beverages before bedtime.
  • Check your medications as they might be contributing to insomnia. You can do this by talking to your doctor.
