Fresh Air- An Easy Cure for Insomnia

With the onset of winters some people find it difficult to sleep properly or they develop seasonal insomnia. The main reason for insomnia during winters is the stale and stuffy air inside your house. A constant flow of fresh air will not only induce sound sleep but it also reduces the chances of insomnia.

It is observed that people living in place with variable climates suffer from insomnia in a particular season. It is seen that the problem of insomnia gets worsen in winter season. Some people think that increased symptoms of insomnia are due to the side effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

What is Seasonal Affective Disorder?

The main question which arises is: What is Seasonal Affective Disorder? With the onset of winters there are few changes observed in few people. These changes are often called as

“Winter Blues.”

The common observed symptoms of seasonal affective disorder are

  • Overeating
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Lethargy

  • Social or family problem

Can Fresh Air Treat Seasonal Insomnia?

As the cause of seasonal insomnia seems to be simple in the same way the cure is also simple for few people. The cure could be as simple as flow of fresh air in your bedroom. It is observed that fresh air is beneficial in treating your seasonal insomnia.

The concept is very simple, as the fresh breeze during summer or spring relaxes you and makes you fall asleep. But during winter season opening the windows for fresh breeze doesn’t seems to be possible. No one can think of opening a window on a freezing night for fresh air.

During winters the normal trend is to close all the windows to prevent cold breeze coming inside. Due to closed windows the air circulation stops and the atmosphere inside your house becomes stale and stuffy. Some people find it difficult to sleep in such stuffy and stale atmosphere.

To freshen up the stale atmosphere inside it is advisable to open your windows daily for at least half an hour. If the temperature outside is really freezing to open your bedroom window then you can try other methods to condition the air inside. Here are few suggestions which you can try:

  • You can use an air purifier. These are easily available in any local hardware store or you can even buy online. It is advisable for you to use a mobile air purifier as you can carry it in any room. Don’t forget to switch it on in night before you sleep.
  • Try switching on ceiling fan during winters. Ceiling fan will circulate fresh air in your bedroom.
  • If your central heating system or furnace is old then go for the latest model of furnace. The latest furnaces are designed in such a way that they circulate air as well as keep your home warm. The latest system will also keep the air fresh and clean.

If the temperature is moderately cold then don’t hesitate to keep your window open. If you are living in place with mild cold temperature then manage to keep your bedroom window open. If you are able to manage a constant flow of fresh air in your bedroom then the possibilities of you developing insomnia will decrease.
